Full Summer 2024 Schedule:

Master Monologue Workshop

Ages: Middle 10-17 years old
Level: Beginner to Advanced
Class Size: 10 -15
Tuition: $90
Director: Robyn Cuthbertson

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
Rehearsals: Saturdays from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm; May 11th & 18th
Class 1: Bring two (2) monologues that you have chosen and are familiar with. They do not need to be memorized until May 18th. In this session students will learn:

-How to analyze a monologue by using imagery and motivation effectively

-About Personal Presentation: dress, headshot, resume, and slate
Class 2:  Presentation of your memorized monologue through a mock audition. In this session students will receive:

-Coaching and workshopping of presented monologues

-Feedback and aid in finetuning headshots and resumes

Description: Whether you are preparing for Players auditions, commercial work, or the upcoming school year, the monologue is the actor’s strongest tool for owning   themselves as an artist and making an indelible impression. But where to begin? This workshop is for all levels of experience: Beginner to Advanced. With knowledge and confidence, you will learn how to embrace…and enjoy…the solo spotlight. Please come in with two (2) monologues, two (2) minutes long each, classical or modern that you are familiar with and are willing to memorize.

NOTE: You will need to have two (2) monologues from a published play chosen that you are familiar with for the first class, preferably, a comedic and a dramatic piece. Read the entire play from which your piece was chosen. No movie, book, or stand-alone monologues! (Please note that the monologues do not have to be memorized until May 18th.)

Choosing Your Monologue:

You don’t get to choose your own material very often, so this is your chance to find something you love and can really make your own.

DO choose: a piece that’s the appropriate length. Monologues should be 2-3 minutes long.

                    – from a PLAY—not from “original” monologue books or movies. You’ll be studying the play to learn how to play the character.

                    – a piece you LIKE, that fits you and that showcases what you can do best. You want to enjoy this!

                    – a piece similar to the type of play you’re auditioning for—children’s plays or a younger role in an adult play.

DON’T: choose anything violent or vulgar.

                    – use dialects and regional vocabulary.

                    – choose Shakespeare (or any type of classical play) unless you have experience with that type of material.

                    – choose a piece that’s just telling about something that happened. A monologue isn’t just a long speech. It needs a reason to exist.

The character needs to be working through a problem, trying to get a solution. Something must be at stake.

                    – choose monologues that are overdone, such as Charlie Brown or Anne Frank. Make a unique choice.

Description: This summer session will explore devising and movement theatre: the students will contribute all the ideas and storylines in the show. It offers the dual experiences of being in the writer’s room as well as being the actors who perform the script. This is a very exciting and unique way to work and is great for students of all types – from pure performers who want to grow new stage muscles to those who see themselves as having some directing or writing skills and also love performing.

This class will explore movement; akin to that of Frantic Assembly. Students will look at generating story from the movement we build from scratch. The movement and text will be layered together and the students will help shape and choose the direction of the show. This could be a melodrama, musical, or drama the ensemble will choose. The entire session will be guided and shaped by the teacher who has created original work using this model many times and is confident it will be a rich, fun, and new experience.
